Virgalene "Penny" Shugart, 87 of Hale Center, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church in Plainview with Pastor Matt Perkins officiating. Interment will follow at Plainview Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Lemons Funeral Home.

Virgalene was born on January 30, 1936, in Plainview, Texas to Virgil Settle and Ada Townsend. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1954. She continued her education at Wayland Baptist University and received her nursing license as an LVN.  She was a nurse in Plainview for many years. She married Melvin Shugart on November 23, 1957, in Plainview. Mr. Shugart passed away on February 16, 1992.

Virgalene was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Plainview, where she enjoyed attending. She loved animals, rose bushes, and loved to read.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Shugart, her parents, Virgil and Ada Settle, two sisters: Theresa Day and Cynthia Settle; and two brothers: Buck and Whitt Settle.

Virgalene is survived by her three daughters: Lori George (Tim)of San Antonio, Anglia Baker (Tommy) of Hale Center, and Carrie Shugart-Houston (Michelle) of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Jack Settle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
