Shirley Joyce Castle, age 91, formerly of San Antonio, Texas, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Barron Care and Rehab Facility, in Barron, Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at Lemons Memorial Chapel, 206 West 8th Street, Plainview, Texas, on Friday, May 1, 2026 at 10:00am. Inurnment will follow in Plainview Memorial Park. Cremation service arrangements are under the care of Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview.
Shirley was born in Taylor County, Texas on November 19, 1934, to Wayne and Adeline Lilly/Hitt. Shirley attended and graduated from Cisco High School where she was an expert baton twirler and received a scholarship to a Junior College for baton twirling.
Shirley met and married the love of her life Jack Burton on December 2, 1954, while he was in the United States Air Force. They lived in California for one year following Jack’s discharge from the Air Force. They then moved to Texas where they settled and raised their family. Shirley and Jack loved to visit Ruidoso, New Mexico, where they enjoyed the mountains and the pine trees. They also loved square dancing so much so that they were members of The Belles Beaux Square Dance Club and participated in many square dance events. Shirley and Jack were married 36 years until his death in 1990.
In 1993, Shirley married Pete Castle. Together they loved to travel the country on their 5th wheel. They were married 11 years until Pete’s death in 2004.
Shirley had many jobs in her lifetime. She was a telephone operator, a bank teller, and a manager at a deli for a local grocery store. She then became a secretary for Central Freight Lines for more than 30 years and she worked as a secretary well into her 80’s.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ann Helbert of Hale Center, Texas, son, Bradley J. Burton of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and son, Todd W. Burton of San Antonio, Texas. She is also survived by one sister, Claudine (Harold) of Blackburn Springfield, Missouri; ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her first spouse, Jack Burton, her second spouse, Peter Castle, sister, Joanne (Charlie) Schneider, brother, Tom (Mary) Morris, daughter-in-law, Judy Burton and grandson, Chad Burton.
The family would like to thank Barron Care and Rehab and Adoray Hospice for their care of Shirley in her last days.
