September 29, 1934 – January 14, 2024
Dr. Richard E. Morgan, 89 of Plainview, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2024, surrounded by his wife and daughters. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 2:00pm, January 20, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church Plainview officiated by Rev. Jonathan Scanlon. Reception to follow after service. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview.
Richard was born on September 29, 1934, in Bexar County, TX, to Charles R. and Louise (Stahley) Morgan. When Richard was in 3rd grade the family moved to Plainview and lived on the second floor of the Hilton Hotel. His father was part owner and manager of the hotel after his business partner won the hotel off Conrad Hilton in a card game. Richard graduated from Plainview High School in 1953 and attended the University of Texas in Austin. After completing his freshman year, he enlisted in the Navy where he served as a corpsman embedded with the Marines at an Army hospital. It was in the Navy that he discovered his love for optometry. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN in 1961. Richard retired from practicing Optometry in 2020 at the age of 85.
While in Memphis he met his wife Sharon (Hardesty) Morgan. They married in 1960 and had two daughters, Richelle, and Deanna. Richard was a long time Elder at First Presbyterian Church and served as the first moderator of the Palo Duro Presbytery in 1972. He served on the Plainview School Board from 1974 - 1982. He also served on the YMCA Board with distinction well over 40 years and was awarded Lifetime Board Member in 2009.
Richard is survived by his wife Sharon (Hardesty) Morgan, and daughters Richelle (Tim) Johnson, and Deanna (Chris) Hollas; grandchildren, Morgan and Trey Johnson, Emily, John, and Eleanor Hollas; and brother, David Lee Morgan.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Edna (Morgan) Davidson; brothers, Charles "Chuck" Morgan, and George Morgan; nephews, David G. Morgan, and George Paul Morgan, Jr.
