Obituary

Plainview Lois Elizabeth Day, 97, of Lubbock, formally of Petersburg went to join the Lord on Monday, March 2, 2015 in Lubbock, Texas. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 am on Friday, March 6, 2015 in the Petersburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 on Thursday, March 5, 2015 in Lemons Funeral Home. Services are under the personal care of Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mrs. Day was born on March 7, 1917 to the late O.C. and Delia (Rediker) Snelling in Tillman CO, Oklahoma. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1934, and afterwards married Gene Mayo in 1935. They were engaged in the ranching business until his death in 1955. She married Jerome Day on March 12, 1960, and they farmed south of Petersburg until his death in April, 1985. After his passing she still maintained her home in Petersburg and worked as a city secretary, and later in life in the Petersburg school system. Mrs. Day was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ in Petersburg, Texas, where she was known for being involved in all of the women festivities in the church. She was also a 4-H leader, loved sewing, gardening, a very hard worker, but especially a true pioneer to her community. With everything she accomplished in her life; her family was her one true love. She is preceded in death by her parents; O.C. and Delia Snelling, husbands, Gene Mayo, and Jerome Day, two sisters; Lucretia Umphres, and Thelma Haynes, and one brother; Murel Snelling. Those left to cherish her memory are; Sam and Peggy Mayo of New Deal, Texas; Jerry and Helen Day of Lubbock, Texas; Polly Harris of Spur, Texas, and Sue Ann and Don Van Winkle of Ferdinand, Indiana, two brothers Elmo Snelling and Kenneth Snelling. She was also blessed with fourteen grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and many great and great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their thanks to the Bee Hive Assisted Living Center in Lubbock, Texas for their care in the past few years.
