July 16, 1952 – September 26, 2025
Larry "Sambo" Olivares, Jr., 73 of Plainview, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, at his residence. A funeral service for Mr. Olivarez will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Harvest Christian Fellowship Church, with Pastor Roger Munoz officiating. Interment will follow in Plainview Memorial Park. A viewing will be held from 11:00am until 9:00pm on Friday, October 3, 2025, at Elim Worship Center in Plainview. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview.
Larry was born in Spur, Texas on July 16, 1952, to Eulalio Olivares and Maria (Vargas) Olivares. He was a member of Elim Worship Center in Plainview. He loved his church and his church family.
Larry was a truck driver for 32 years and he loved to drive his truck. He was a devoted father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle who loved to spend time with his family, friends, and his nieces and nephews. Known for his sense of humor, Larry loved to make those around him laugh with his jokes. He was compassionate and always willing to help others when possible.
In his free time, Larry enjoyed watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys, and also enjoyed bowling, playing pool, watching boxing, and dancing, especially dancing to the "twist."
Larry is survived by his ten children: Melinda Olivares (Clyde Cantu), Seranda Olivares (Jesse Flores), Lisa Marie Reyes, all of San Antonio, Texas, Chris and Sabas Rodriquez of Cibolo, Texas, Candi and Rocky Nunez, of Plainview, Texas, Crystal and Oscar Cruz, of Royce City, Texas, Larry Olivarez of Plainview, Texas, Richard Garza, Orlando Garza, and Angelica Bocanegra all of Wichita, Kansas; nine siblings: Mary (Lillie) Luna of Dodge City, Kansas, Santiago and Mary Lou Luna of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Linda and Robert Cantu, Joe (Cobra) Olivares both of Amarillo, Texas, Sindy Olivares, Sylvia Bustos both of Dodge City, Kansas, Victoria Olivares of Wichita, Kansas, Debbie Olivares of Great Bend, Kansas, and Rebeca and Guadalupe Chavez of Dodge City, Kansas; thirty three grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, twenty eight nieces and nephews and many more great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his two daughters, Anna Marie Olivares of Plainview, Texas, and Monica Rodriquez of Dallas, Texas; his parents, Eulalio (Lalo) and Maria Olivares of Dodge City, Kansas; his sister Dianna Mora Olivares of Plainview, Texas.
