Obituary

Margaret Evelyn Howell, 106 years young, went to sing with the angels on Friday, December 5, 2025.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2025, in Lemons Memorial Chapel in Plainview, Texas at 11:00am with Josh Light officiating. A private burial will be in the family plot in Olton Cemetery in Olton, Texas.

Evelyn was born on October 13, 1919, in Olton, Texas to Jans "John" Meekma and Margaret "Maggie" Musgrave Light. She married David Horton Howell on July 9, 1939, in Olton, Texas. They celebrated 65 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 2, 2004. They had four children: David Horton Howell, Jr., who passed in 2008; James Stanley Howell who passed in 2020; Carol Ann Howell Smith and John Kennedy Howell. They began their married lives with Evelyn being a homemaker and then soon becoming a mother while Horton taught vocational agriculture in Post and Meadow, Texas and then farming for 30 years in Lockney. Evelyn worked at a music store in Plainview and taught piano lessons at the store as well as private lessons in their home. They moved to Fort Worth in 1973 where Evelyn worked at Striplings department store and continued to teach private piano lessons. They moved to Baptist Memorial Retirement Center in San Angelo in 1988.

In addition to being a homemaker extraordinaire, Evelyn was a Sunday School teacher, played piano at several churches, was part of a women's gospel singing group, and was a quiltmaker, seamstress, gardener, crossword puzzle lover, and wonderful baker of cakes and cookies.  She did all this, but she was SO much more.

How do you describe an angel?

She was the sweetest, kindest, most loving, most giving, SO, SO giving soul you ever met! She waited on every one hand and foot. The closest to perfection in a mother, wife, grandmother, and friend. She was always there for us, a constant in our lives! A true gem that gave 100% her whole life. These words do not even begin to describe how wonderful she was to everyone she met. She was sweet and loving until her last breath.

In addition to her husband and two sons, Evelyn was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers, as well as two grandchildren:  Ashley Ann Howell Endow and Aaron Douglas Howell. Survivors include her son, John Howell of San Angelo, daughter, Carol Smith and her husband, Greg of Red Oak, Texas, and daughter-in-law, Merilyn Howell of North Richland Hills, Texas, as well as eight grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
